Mary Baxter is the winner of this year's travel bursary from the Eastern Canada Farm Writers' Association (ECFWA), which provides support for a member to attend the Canadian Farm Writers Federation annual conference.
Baxter is a field editor with Better Farming and Better Pork. She has served on the ECFWA executive for two of the three years she's been an association member. Currently, she's the eastern association's second vice president.
Making the announcement today, association president Kelly Daynard said Baxter focused in her application on the importance of connecting with agricultural communications peers across Canada.
Here's an excerpt from the application:
"Canadian Farm Writers' Federation conferences are so important. Through tours they provide valuable opportunities to connect with the people farming in specific regions. Through seminars, they help us to hone the diverse skills demanded of agricultural coverage. The awards program not only recognizes best efforts but also helps the industry to establish standards for work. Last, but certainly not least,is the opportunity to build relationships that can provide career-long support."
This year's CFWF conference takes place October 1-4 in Comox, B.C. Conference details can be found at http://www.cfwf.ca/conference2008/.
