Better to use maligned spuds than destroy them

The federal government made the right move when it halted export of P.E.I. potatoes to the U.S. due to the presence of a fungal disease called potato wart. It poses no risk to human health, but America says it is free of it and wants to keep it that way. While a science-based solution is worked out, the newly announced Surplus Potato Management Response will direct as many potatoes as possible to processors, packers and food banks to minimize the amount of potatoes that must be destroyed. Owen Roberts is an agricultural journalist and communications instructor based in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. He is a trustee on the Global Foundation for Agricultural Journalism and an associate editor (communications) for the Journal of Agromedicine. Previously, Owen was president of the International Forum for Agricultural Journalists, an agricultural communications faculty member at the University of Illinois, and research communications director at the University of Guelph. His programs and research papers have been recognized through awards from the Journal of Applied Communications, the National Agri-Marketing Association, the Association for Communications Excellence and the Canadian Farm Writers' Federation.
