Consumers, environmentalists and some others might have wanted to hear the president of Ontario’s largest general farm organization, Bette Jean Crews, say the likes of food safety or clean water were farmers’  top priority. But rather, in her annual outlook message, the Ontario Federation of Agriculture president put profitability as Number One for farmers. After all, farming’s a business, she says, and profitability is the top priority for any business. That statement, on which I build my Urban Cowboy column this week in the Guelph Mercury, will please farmers. They’ll be heartened to hear such brave words publicly uttered by a farm leader.

The photo below, from the federation’s website, shows president Crews along with other federation leaders Mark Wales (left) and Keith Currie.
